“English Learning Is Like…” : Metaphorical Perceptions of Prospective English Teachers About Language Learning Process

The present study aimed to examine the attitudes and types of metaphorical perceptions male female prospective English teachers (PETs) towards their learning process. Elicitation sheet with prompt “English is (like) … because …†was used collect data. data were qualitatively analyzed by listing, naming, categorizing, determining metaphors. results elicited metaphors reveal that PETs’ process include positive, negative, ambivalent, neutral perceptions. Both PETs viewed in different attitudes. Male generated more negative than positive ones, while produced ones. findings also show categorized into several such as enjoyable activity, construction work, movement/journey, experience, planting/farming, exploration, things. These metaphor imply importance socio-cultural background learners. In conclusion, help determine appropriate strategies, methods, materials for teaching learning.
